Leoni offers biocompatible medical cables with UL-recognition

New outer jacket offers advantages in patient-oriented applications with high safety requirements

Friesoythe - Biocompatibility in combination with a UL style is rarely found with medical cables. Often both requirements are mutually exclusive. Leoni has now succeeded in obtaining the ‘UL-recognized component for external use’ certification for medical cables with an innovative outer jacket, as well as passing the biocompatibility test in an accredited laboratory. Medical cables with this jacket can be used in many patient-oriented applications with high fire requirements such as in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) coil cabling.

Underwriters Laboratories (UL) certifies products for the entry into the Canadian and US market. Appliance Wiring Material (AWM) styles indicate in which applications a product can be used. A magnetic resonance multi-coax cable with a special jacket of thermoplastic urethane (TPU) from Leoni has been certified according to AWM style 22264. This ‘style page’ states that the product passes the vertical ‘cable flame’ test and is therefore tested for external use. This newly developed outer jacket can be used for various medical cables. Also, it is biocompatible and causes no skin irritations in contact with the patient.

Demonstrated Expertise for Medical Technology

With biocompatible and UL-certified cables, Leoni offers safe connections with a heat resistance of up to 80°C without the use of materials, which are harmful to the patient. Until now, obtaining UL certification for medical cables has been less important. The focus has been on iocompatibility guidelines such as DIN ISO 10993. For even more safety, Leoni has worked on a product that additionally complies with UL 758 (Standard for Safety - Appliance Wiring Material) and thereby has demonstrated expertise for medical technology: medical cables with an outer jacket that assures patients and medical staff the safety they deserve - for their health.
